The event occurred in the Arnavutköy district of Istanbul, where drivers identified as S.C. and D.G. ignored a red traffic signal, jeopardizing public safety. Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya emphasized the severity of such infractions, stating that running a red light is not merely a traffic rule violation but a reckless act that endangers citizens' lives. This incident follows a sobering statistic from 2024, where 137 citizens lost their lives due to red light infractions.
Stricter Penalties Under Proposed New Traffic Law
In response to the ongoing issue, a new traffic law proposal introduces escalating penalties for drivers who repeatedly ignore red lights. The graduated sanctions are designed to deter habitual offenders and enhance road safety.

- 6th Violation: Permanent revocation of the driver's license.
Public Urged to Report Reckless Drivers
Minister Yerlikaya called on the public to assist in promoting traffic safety. Citizens who witness drivers committing such dangerous acts are urged to report them immediately to the 112 Emergency Call Center. Authorities have assured that all reports will be acted upon promptly to ensure the safety of all road users.
