Istanbul Drivers Apprehended Following Dangerous Red Light Violation

New Traffic Law Proposes License Suspensions for Repeat Offenders

Turkish authorities have announced the apprehension of two drivers in Istanbul for running a red light in a shocking incident that nearly resulted in a tragic pedestrian accident. The traffic violation, captured on video, shows children narrowly escaping being hit by the vehicles, highlighting the grave dangers of red light running.

A Narrow Escape Prompts National Action

The event occurred in the Arnavutköy district of Istanbul, where drivers identified as S.C. and D.G. ignored a red traffic signal, jeopardizing public safety. Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya emphasized the severity of such infractions, stating that running a red light is not merely a traffic rule violation but a reckless act that endangers citizens' lives. This incident follows a sobering statistic from 2024, where 137 citizens lost their lives due to red light infractions.

Stricter Penalties Under Proposed New Traffic Law

In response to the ongoing issue, a new traffic law proposal introduces escalating penalties for drivers who repeatedly ignore red lights. The graduated sanctions are designed to deter habitual offenders and enhance road safety.

    • 3rd Violation: 30
    • day driver's license suspension.

    • 4th Violation: 60
    • day driver's license suspension.

    • 5th Violation: 90
    • day driver's license suspension.

    • 6th Violation: Permanent revocation of the driver's license.

Public Urged to Report Reckless Drivers

Minister Yerlikaya called on the public to assist in promoting traffic safety. Citizens who witness drivers committing such dangerous acts are urged to report them immediately to the 112 Emergency Call Center. Authorities have assured that all reports will be acted upon promptly to ensure the safety of all road users.
