Turkey's New Traffic Law Aims to Halt Dangerous Fleeing Drivers

Major Penalties Proposed for Ignoring Police Stop Orders

In a significant move to enhance road safety, the Turkish government has proposed a new traffic law that introduces severe penalties for drivers who fail to comply with police stop orders. The draft legislation seeks to drastically increase fines and impose immediate license suspensions and vehicle impoundments.

Current System Deemed Insufficient

The proposed changes come in response to what authorities describe as inadequate deterrents in the current system. Under existing law, the penalty for ignoring a stop order is an administrative fine of 2,167 lira. Officials argue this amount is not enough to prevent dangerous behavior that has led to numerous casualties.

The High Cost of Disobeying Stop Signals

The push for stricter traffic penalties is backed by sobering statistics. Over the past six years, disobedience to police stop orders has resulted in significant loss of life and injury.

Recent Incident Highlights the Problem

The necessity for the law was illustrated by a recent event in the Sincan district of Ankara. A motorcycle driver, identified as R.E., was caught after fleeing from a police stop order. While the driver was eventually apprehended and fined under the current law, the new proposal aims to ensure such evasion is "unthinkable" for drivers in the future.

Authorities emphasize that ignoring a stop order is a serious offense that jeopardizes public safety and the lives of law enforcement officers and civilians. They urge citizens to report such dangerous drivers to the 112 Emergency Call Center.
